History of the Formation of Houston Heights Woman’s Club-Evening Group
In November 2006, shortly after my retirement, I decided I wanted to organize an evening group of the HHWC. The 106-year-old group had always met in the mornings as was customary for women’s groups formed in the late 1800’s.
My primary goal was to make sure the clubhouse at 1846 Harvard was preserved and enhanced so that it would become a center of the community as it had been in 1912. I planned the club to be a clustering of small special interest groups since this was how the club was originally organized.
First of all, I wanted to found a book club for those with literary interests, second a community service group so that the club could continue giving back to the neighborhood, third an arts and crafts group that would focus on making quilts and other fund raising projects.
The club was to open to all and was to serve as an opportunity for women living in the Heights and all over Houston to become connected their enjoyment of various interests. I had no concept of size—thinking that possibly the club could number as many as 50 women. The end result has brought me much joy and pleasure, as well as self-satisfaction and the feeling that the original group formed a nucleus that has become a living legacy.
